👨💻 From Lab to Layman - Efficiently Democratizing Medical LLMs for 50 Languages via a Mixture of Language Family Experts :
The ApolloMoE project, developed by Freedom Intelligence, tackles the challenge of creating a multilingual medical Large Language Model (LLM) that efficiently scales across 50 languages, including many low-resource ones. The model uses Hybrid-k routing and Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture to activate language-specific experts, improving performance without increasing model size.
🔹 Language Family Experts for Efficient Scaling
By grouping languages into families, ApolloMoE minimizes the need for extra parameters, maintaining high-quality generalization across major and minor languages. This reduces computational load and enhances cross-lingual knowledge transfer.
🔹 Spread Out in the End Mechanism
Inspired by circuit theory, ApolloMoE features a “Spread Out in the End” mechanism, where earlier layers integrate cross-lingual information while later layers specialize in language-specific processing. This approach boosts performance, especially for low-resource languages, without additional training.
🔹 Medical Dataset and Applications
ApolloMoE’s capabilities are bolstered by a high-quality medical dataset that includes data from 12 major languages. With this foundation, the model achieves enhanced generalization, interpretability, and multilingual medical understanding, allowing it to support healthcare access globally.
